Hi Charles -
You should have a file called .xinitrc in your home directory
containing the full path to gnome-session:
more .xinitrc
/usr/X11R6/bin/gnome-session
Then, after you login, you can start X with the startx command
See the startx man page :
NAME
startx - initialize an X session
SYNOPSIS
startx [ [ client ] options ... ] [ -- [ server ] option ... ]
DESCRIPTION
The startx script is a front end to xinit..........
