When Europe was developing GSM back in the early 80's CDMA was not a proven technology for cellular and it is locked up by too many patents with one single company (PS Guess why Ericsson bought significant chunks of Qualcomm a while back). BTW The company I work for has jsut joined the 4G definition groups ;-).
