'scuze the spelling ;)

I have seen on a number of sites where you enter information on a web site
and then to authinticate that it really was you (like to be added to a
mailing list or to a BBS) it sends you an eMail with a special URL or code
to be emailed back that is some sort of hash that does not get duplicated
across different users.

Any of you know of a good piece of software to do that?  Prefurably free
or open source but commercial will do in a pinch.
