I believe it was described to me as "failure under load", and it seemed that just about any activity that lasted several seconds was considered a "load". My early attempts at an install failed, usually during the copy from cdrom during the ports install. I really didn't think that lowering my clock speed from 450 to 400 MHz actually kept the chip that much cooler, so I have suspected that the real problem was that the chip was not stable at its rated speed. I also heard that there was a bad batch of K6-2's -- and with my luck -- I got one. And again, I understand that FreeBSD works the hardware more than Windows, so these problems may not show up under windows. However, I don't claim to understand this statement.
