Cups gives the following information about my printer: Description: Location: Home office Printer State: idle, accepting jobs. Device URI: parallel:/dev/lpt0 From here I conclude that the problem is not what you described. At start up, even with the printer switched of, I get the following: Probing for PnP devices on ppbus0 ppbus: <HEWLETT-PACKARD DESKJET 710C.
