Hi, You might consider truenas core (once freenas) https://www.truenas.com/ which is a FreeBSD based NAS appliance. If you want to do it all yourself then it all depends on what features you want - ZFS and NFS is out of the box with the core system, samba will bring in SMB support what else did you want ? For most other things (web interface, DLNA server ...) there are multiple options. Just one thing 12.1 is old and should be upgraded - look into freebsd-update.
