I believe that it was mentioned that SSH (using RSA key
authentication) could be used to get around a `*' in the passwd
field.
A (theoretical) way of getting around the shell issue is
~/.login_conf. From the man page:
shell prog Session shell to execute
rather than the shell speci-
fied in the passwd file. The
SHELL environment variable
will contain the shell speci-
fied in the password file.
However, as I last recall, this functionality was not implemented.
