No, it gives NSD=0.  Apparently "disk sd0 at scbus?" works better but
this may just be due to the old mechanism.  I don't know of any working
examples with "?" in a device name

This is controlled by in devices.i386.  You can specify swap on cd0
but not on sio0 :-).
