Is your machine modern enough to support usb boot? You could download 
the memstick image version of a distro and do it that way. Of course, 
this assumes that your FreeBSD setup isn't totally borked in a way that 
just breaks dd.

Actually, that's another sanity test you should run: can you dd other 
usb sticks?
