Well, if there's no heavy load on the ethernet segment in both directions, you might not notice that the duplex setting is wrong. Look at the output of ``netstat -i''. The last column (number of collisions) should be zero for a full-duplex connection. I guess it is non-zero in your case, unless there is really not much traffic on that line.
