Warner,

Right you are.  We changed the irq for pcic0 from 0 to 10, recompiled 
the kernel, and the problem vanished.  The SMC card works flawlessly, 
even in DHCP mode.  Many thanks and a tip o' the hat!  (Now if we can 
just discover why the ThinkPad's terminals go nuts occasionally and 
apparently lose the keymaps we can start celebrating.)
