I had some really strange problems with an Adaptec 2940UW2 controller and a
dual CPU system. It looked like an interference problem with the noise of
the high speed CPUs somehow getting back into the cable. After re-routing
the cables away from both CPUs things worked better, but eventually I had to
dump the 2940UW2 for a 2940UW which worked perfectly in the machine. I did
try dropping the speed of the UW2 card before swapping, no help.

I'm guessing that disabling the SMP code might be shutting down the CPU
causing the trouble. Try replacing the cables, re-routing cables and or a
non UW2 controller.
