I have also seen this on some of my machines (haven't checked all of them)
They probe as:

ed0 at 0x280-0x29f irq 11 maddr 0xd8000 msize 8192 on isa
ed0: address 00:00:c0:be:12:95, type SMC8416C/SMC8416BT (16 bit) 

but I know they are 8216C.

I haven't figured out what went wrong yet.:(
