That sounds very much like where I was, before using FreeBSD.
I highly recommend the text editor joe, it's exactly like what you
are used to, and small, full featured. It comes in a unix version
and a DOS version too.
Midnight Commander is quite similar to Norton, you'll love it.
Other people might offer ideas for your other needs.
