It looks like the culprit might be ntpdate not running when it should. When ntpdate runs towards the end of boot it reports what it did. In /var/run/dmesg.boot there's no output from the last boot. I've seen output from it before, so at least sometimes it works, but apparently not always. Sorry for the noise! bob prohaska
