Could you make it available again? Does the problem still persist in newer versions of the OS? Quite a few problems have been fixed in that area lately (in CURRENT and some of the bug fixes have been back ported into STABLE). Did you try and upgrade the system to 3.2-STABLE (cvsup the sources and do a make world in /usr/src) to see whether that stops the system from falling over?
