Alex,

the same happened to me with RC2. I booted the machine from CD, manually
mounted the disk and ran sh MAKEDEV all in the /dev directory on the
hard drive (I can't remember all the details). It booted after that.

I think it happened because I *still* can't get the hang of mergemaster.
