Indeed it does.  In fact, the ports/archivers/gtar port provides the
latest GNUtar (1.13.25) which is on the list of things I install upon
first booting a freshly installed FreeBSD box.  It's the only way to
make amanda play nicely.

Not on production boxes obviously but I'll put it through its paces at
home for you if you like.  I should think it would be pretty
straightforward seeing as there is already a port which has taken care
of any potential build problems.  It looks like you've Cc'd the port
maintainer for the gtar port on this so perhaps he's interested in
helping out?  Let me know if you need testing assistance.
