this is what I always have done, but it's not working on this machine:

# killall ntp
No matching processes were found

# date 200209201048
Fri Sep 20 10:48:00 CDT 2002

# ll /etc/localtime
lrwxr-xr-x  1 root  wheel  35 Sep 20 08:42 /etc/localtime -> 
/usr/share/zoneinfo/America/Chicago

# ntpdate time.nist.gov
20 Sep 10:19:25 ntpdate[78703]: step time server 192.43.244.18 offset 
1783.164410 sec

# :(((
