The text in section 2.24 should make it clear that 2) and 3) are *alternative* solutions. Doing both will render the FreeBSD disk inaccessible. It should perhaps also mention that 1) is a perfectly adequate solution and that there is no reason to do 2) or 3) unless you feel recompiling your kernel is easier than typing one line at the shell prompt.
