The Handbook has a lot of good information for beginners. It's
available in various formats from:
ftp2.uk.FreeBSD.org/pub/FreeBSD/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook

It's also online at http://www.uk.freebsd.org/handbook/index.html

John.
