Either you choose a vendor which offers FreeBSD support from their own (e.g. HighPoint) or which is obviously supported by FreeBSD (3Ware). The only "reliable" solution for everything else concerning ATA RAID is to use the logical volume manager Vinum, see also vinum(8).

If your hard disks don't even run as single drives and the controller chip is not listed in ata(4) and there is no hint in src/sys/dev/ata/ata-chipset.c then donate hardware to an ATA developer or ask manufacturers for hardware specifications.

Don't care too much about ATA RAID. If you don't find support at first go, it will make you crazy.
