The minor number 3 denotes the pass thru device:

From the output of dmesg:

  rah /kernel: pass3: <UMAX UMAX S-12 V2.0> Fixed Scanner SCSI-2 device 

/usr/local/sane.d

cat umax.conf
/dev/pass1
cat dll.conf
umax
