Are you using tcsh as your login shell?  If so, that's the reason.  A
bug in tcsh which is now fixed caused it to resolve the hostname for
some reason.  Either get a new binary or add your hostname (and
localhost) to /etc/hosts and have modify /etc/host.conf to use
/etc/hosts first.
