Problem with the boot.flp, or the ftp site, or...? Sounds like the kernel.GENERIC is missing from the bin dist. That's pretty bad. I can only conclude that the build must have failed in some very odd way on that day. Have you tried whatever the latest one on current.freebsd.org is?
