It took me about 20 hours of reading the handbook and googling to set up my first FreeBSD LAN-to-DSL gateway with no prior *nix experience whatsoever. Of course, I had to improve the setup in almost every way later, but the initial learning curve is very short. It's the desire and excitement that you'll need.
