Which shell are you using? Most shells have their own version of nice
with different syntax than nice(1). e.g. :
[simon@arthur:~] nice -n 10 echo Hello
nice: Badly formed number.
[simon@arthur:~] /usr/bin/nice -n 10 echo Hello
Hello
[simon@arthur:~] nice +10 echo Hello
Hello

Some shells may provide a builtin nice command which is similar or ide=

tical to this utility. Consult the builtin(1) manual page.
It think this is what you are seeing.
