Synopsis: shutdown does not halt the machine. shutdown logs into root account without password. State-Changed-From-To: open->closed State-Changed-By: fenner State-Changed-When: Fri Apr 30 11:46:53 PDT 1999 State-Changed-Why: shutdown without any arguments brings the system into single-user mode. If you want it to halt, use "shutdown -h"; if you want it to reboot, use "shutdown -r"; if you want it to ask for the root password before going into single-user mode, edit /etc/ttys and change "secure" to "insecure" on the line that starts "console".
