If you want to install a pre-built release, installing 2.1.7.1-RELEASE

If you don't mind pulling the kerenel sources down for 2.2+ (basically
2.2-RELEASE + later patches), and making a new kernel, go ahead and
install 2.2. 2.2+ has the same driver as 2.1.7.1-RELEASE

The ahc driver used by the 2940, is a moving target. I have an oldish
pre 2.1.7 system with a 2940 with an uptime of 140 days. I don't use any
of the performance ehancements though. But I have a 2.2 system with the
newest ahc driver dies with a SCSI error every day (using a 3940UW
though).
