Some of this is easily available, (nihongo de mo) at the site.  I haven't 
tried a Japanese version--in general (judging from experience with Linux) 
adding Japanese support increases the amount of disk space by a bit more 
than you might expect, probably because of the fonts. (Although I've never 
made a scientific study of this, in MS, for example, I see that a roman 
letter font is about 300k vs. 8.7 Megs for a Japanese font.)

Judging from Linux, which might or might not be applicable, a Japanese 
install takes up more room, but otherwise seems to be about the same, as 
far as hardware recognition, etc.
I'm in NYC, so, when I get a Japanese version of something, it's from a NYC 
bookstore--therefore, although it might be a little less current than the 
English equivalent, that's probably because its a CD included in a magazine 
that is a few months old).

It might help if you gave your hardware specification, then people who had 
experience with that hardware can say, yes, this works, no, this didn't 
work, or maybe, but I had trouble getting it to work.
