Right now I create a minimal flash card with just enough of / and /usr to be able to boot, ssh in and do a make install of kernels. The script to do this is still somewhat gross and green. Once you have that, the read only + nfs part is relatively easy (both of these are done via fstab). I suspect you want the former and not the latter, right?
