That all makes sense, thanks for digging into it.

Yes, a mount option to eliminate waiting altogether would work fine, maybe even
better.  Are you thinking of a sibling to "bg", something like "bgnowait" or
"bgnow"?

Another option might be a boolean sysctl, e.g. vfs.nfs.bg_no_wait.

No point messing with the RPC stack unless there are other use cases for this
adjusting the timeout.
