My mother board has a number of USB3 and USB2 hubs/ports. When I plug a USB3 stick into a USB2 port it shows up as 40MB/s whereas it shows up as 400MB/s when plugged into a USB3 port. He should look at how his USB hubs enumerate in /var/run/dmesg.boot.
