I'm running 2.1.5 quite comfortably on a 486SX with 8MB RAM. No prizes for speed, but response time is pretty good. When I have gcc and Emacs running at once I get a little swapping. However, I'm not running X11, and suspect that your performance will drop noticeably if you do.
