FreeBSD has traditionally com with a "UPGRADE.TXT" Basically there's two ways
to upgrade... a binary upgrade... which is mostly like you're asking for, and
a cvsup... rebuilding EVERYTHING from sources.

Upgrading from sources is a bit better 'cause then EVERYTHING is upgraded, not
just whatever distributions you select in the upgrade... (come on, do you
REALLY remember what all distributions you used?)

Binary upgrades are easier... basically, you just BACKUP!!, grab the new
install floppies, boot then and select "Upgrade", select the distributions you
installed on the old system, and bah-da-bing, bah-da-boom, it's all good.

But read UPGRADE.TXT...

Hmmm... maybe a bit ago, I saw something about it being gone... if so, I think
it's near the end of INSTALL.TXT...
