Starting it fro the console works fine.

alt <appropriate F key>
startx

If your terminals are not made, read the MAKEDEV file for the appropriate
./MAKEDEV command because it varies with different versions of FBSD.
Then edit /etc/ttys (pretty much self explanatory) and do:
kill -HUP 1
(or else reboot)
And you should be good to go.
