ata66 needs the 80 conductor cable just like ata100.

ata33 and slower uses the old 40 conductor cable.

the controllers fall back based on cable and drive performance.

From what I quoted/read it seems that ATA66 can use a 40 wire
cable, but ATA100 needs the 80 wire one.
In others, yes one can buy a cable that can work for both, one
can also buy a cable that transmits at the ATA66 speed, but not
at the ATA100.
