If you go to the directory where your logfile is (e.g.
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/xsession-errors) you will see which display modes
were deleted and why.

640 and 800 mode are probably supported but may require you to craft
your own mode lines in '/etc/XF86Config'

You will get a "virtual desktop" error if the mode you are using does
not leave you enough memory to map the extra pixels.

This "bent"-ness is called pin cushion.

There is a very good source for setting up X on the web, but I can't
recall where. Search (X and video and mode and timings) to find it.

See also: 'man xf86config' and 'man xvidtune'.

Be careful. It is possible to cause damage to your video equipment if
you are careless.
