Awright, i know this ought to be simple to do and
it is starting to drive me nuts. I have searched
the web and the archives, and can't find anything
I think is the answer. please help....

Have a new FreeBSD system stood up at work, it will
be a file server, i.e. intend to run samba and nfs
mounts from other *nix systems. New 4.4 out of the
box. All hardware is new also.

I can't ping other than localhost. I have a DHCP
server set up and it works on other machines. I will
be happy for the short term if i can just ping my
dhcp server. right now 'ping 192.168.1.1' returns
a '..no route to host...' error. the nic was in when
i installed the operating system.

How do I tell if the Linksys LNE100TX is working
and has the correct drivers installed? I have
searched all over the net and found that I need (?)
a "pn0" device, but then other sites indicate
that this nic is supported by default. I am
very confused on this point. The linksys website
is for 3.x and their instructions included building
a new kernel - is that still necessary? If not,
what do i do?

second, how do I tell if my dhcp client is
correctly getting something from the dhcp
server? at the command "dhclient" i get
a somewhat unending stream of garbage, which
would of course make sense if the nic is not
set up correctly. ifconfig doesn't show me
anything like an IP address i would be expecting.

most of my exprience is with Red Hat linux. Am
committed to sticking with FreeBSD, so I am willing
to do whatever is necessary. Thanks for the help.
lastly, maybe there is a nic that would be a better
choice?
