I know my solution. I've been using the same USR Courier V.Everything External for a while. I love the thing. If my connection gets squirrely, I pop the VOICE/DATA button on the front, and pppd set to persist reconnects me in a few seconds. I pass it AT&F1 s11=50 s58=33 in my chat script for dialup. The s11=50 works with most modems, and tells it to dial as fast as possible. The s58=33 forces it into v.34 mode since the phonelines in this area are very poor quality. It usually takes it about 15 seconds to connect and handshake. I have a pppd.sh in my /usr/local/etc.rc.d, and a rdate.sh that updates my system clock with MIT's atomic clock each time the machine is rebooted after a make world. Hope this helps.
