Look in comp.mail.sendmail for a thread on this. In short, setting up
sendmail with

MASQUERADE_AS($j)
MASQUERADE_DOMAIN(`localhost.some.domain')
FEATURE(`masquerade_envelope')

fixed the problem.

I'd still rather have a different solution.
