Unless KDM is compilied with the right support IE ./configure --with-
pam or --enable-shadow it will have the same problems as what you 
are describing. Of course the above examples relate to linux. KDM is 
just a optional GUI log in screen. The way to start KDE is with a 
script called startkde which should have been installed on your 
system by default.
