The answer to your question, though; a. Because a base install does not include a windowing system. Not every computer needs one. b. --- "install one" ;-) Have you read any of the Handbook yet? www.freebsd.org/handbook IIRC, Chapter 5 talks about the "X window system", which is what you'll want, I expect.
