That would explain it.  I'm running sendmail on a Linux box:
case "$1" in
  start)
        # Start daemons.
        echo -n "Starting sendmail: "
        daemon sendmail -bd -q15m
        echo
        touch /var/lock/subsys/sendmail
        ;;
(where the daemon fucntion basically strips out path info and starts
the daemon).  No path.
