I see this in /var/log/console.log

pulseaudio[81412]: [] core-util.c: Failed to create secure directory
(/var/run/user/1001/pulse): No such file or directory.

/var/run/user doesn't exist. Maybe I should create it.

/etc/pam.d/system has this line

session         required        pam_xdg.so

DE is xfce4 

stable/15-n282713-6a1ebd14aa96
GENERIC amd64 1500506 1500506

Sound works, is OSS as far as I'm aware.
