You have to use 2.2.8-RELEASE for the large drives.
In the release notes, they state something like
"Support for >8gig drives"

I would suggest installing 2.2.8-RELEASE, my favorite release so far,
either from floppy(if its a new system) or from source(if its an existing
system).
