nonauthoritative answers: "No" (not yet) and "it depends." SMP does not work on Alpha/AXP (yet). I'd say it depends on what you want your "production machine" to do whether you would want to use a single-CPU Alpha and FreeBSD. I've been running 4-current without any noticeable problems -- but it's not doing much (Web & firewall/NAT).
