...and in French, you end up with "Rép :" (yes, with a space between the
word and the colon; that's correct in french but not really in mail agents'
language).

Mutt has an unofficial patch for that very "feature", you can specify a
regexp... 

reply_regexp

Type: string
Default: "^(re|aw):[ \t]+"

A regular expression used to recognize reply messages when threading and
replying. The default value corresponds to the English "Re:" and the
German "Aw:".
