For a regular user, you'll have to partition (slice), label and newfs the 
drive before you can mount it. If you are planning on sharing the drive 
with windows you'll need to keep in mind two things -- windows XP won't 
format a partition > 32gb and the msdosfs driver can't handle FAT 
filesystems over 128gb (I think) without using an experimental "hack". I 
have a 300gb external drive set up with a 32gb fat32 partition for 
"sharing" with XP and the rest as ufs2. Unfortunately the sbp driver 
doesn't work quite right with it and it never attaches the slices, but it 
works fine with usb2 and umass.
