Subject: Panic on boot of today's -CURRENT
Message-ID: <200111211605.fALG5IR59998@bunrab.catwhisker.org>

next in thread | raw e-mail | index | archive | help
A couple of weeks ago, I finally(!) got around to setting up a serial
console for my build machine, and it only took me another week or so
to figure out that while the default behavior works admirably under
-STABLE (if the keyboard is removed prior to boot), -CURRENT needs a
/boot.config file created with

-P

in it to accomplish the same behavior. :-) [Or maybe there are other
ways to accomplish this; I know that without the /boot.config, the
"serial console" wasn't really a console, in that it didn't get
anything written to it until the login: prompt from the completion
of the multi-user boot.]

Anyway, I now have my first panic on boot from -CURRENT since setting
up the serial console; modulo cut/paste damage, the following ought to
be fairly accurate.  :-}

Sources are as of about 3:50 AM PST (8 hrs. west of GMT), from cvsup14.
Here are the boot messages, which start showing some strange ugliness
down near the end:

As I mentioned, this is a build machine; there's no rush to get it up
& running again immediately, so I can poke & prod a bit, to the extent
that this is possible from a remote site. (It's at home, as is the
machine on which I'm composing this note. I'm at work.)

The machine itself is an Iwill DVD-266R system board. (I'm not even trying
to think about using the on-board RAID; it seemed like the most reasonable
dual-CPU board available to me at the time I was building the machine.)
CPUs are a pair of 876 MHz P3s. I had been running it with 2 128 MB DDR
DIMMs; Fry's recently had DDR memory on sale, so it now has 4 128 MB DDR
DIMMs. The machine has been pretty stable since August (when I built
it), tracking -STABLE & -CURRENT daily. When I put in the new memory, I
tried some other BIOS tweaks that didn't work out, so I backed them out
again about a week ago. I did leave in the change to use 4-way
interleaving, and the machine has been OK for the last week's worth of
builds -- though I'd be foolish to rule out hardware at this stage of
investigation.

One thing I find bizarre is the line

	_SnMgP :/ sCbPiUn1/ ianpiitc

just before the panic. It looks as if some (random?) character is being
inserted just before each character that is supposed to be there, so
what it ought to be showing is "SMP: CPU1 apic".

Oh: normally, I could just re-boot the machine from a different slice,
but that may be a little tricky presently.

Ideas, thoughts, suggestions?

Thanks,
david
